Evanston is not short on smart, thoughtful people. What it has sometimes been short on is accessible, high-quality couples therapy that understands the particular pressures of life here. The academic culture, the dual-career households, the proximity to Chicago without being fully in it, and the specific dynamics that come with professional lives built around achievement and expectation.
Evanston attracts a specific kind of person. Educated, professionally accomplished, often working in academia, medicine, law, or the creative sector. The relationship problems are not different from anyone else’s. But the context shapes them in particular ways.
Couples therapy is not a place where you argue in front of a mediator. It is structured, purposeful work that helps both of you understand what is actually happening underneath the surface conflict, the withdrawal, the disconnection, or the breach of trust.
The first session
We spend the first session understanding each person’s experience of the relationship and the pattern that has brought you here. I am not looking for who is right. I am looking for what the cycle is and what it costs both of you to stay in it.
The ongoing work
Depending on what you bring, the work may include:
Sessions are 60 minutes and typically begin weekly. The process moves from understanding the pattern, to interrupting it, to building something new.
Insurance: BCBS PPO, Aetna PPO, and United Healthcare PPO. Self-pay $200 per session.
Not every partner is ready for couples therapy at the same time. Individual therapy is a legitimate and effective option for anyone who wants to work on their relationship from their own side of it.
When one person changes their patterns, the relationship dynamic shifts. Individual work often opens the door to couples work later. And even when it does not, it produces real and lasting change in how you relate to the people closest to you.
Specialized training: LMFT credential means Marriage and Family Therapy is the core specialization, not a secondary offering
Generational lens: The patterns running your relationship often started in your families of origin. We address those roots, not just the surface conflict
Convenient Loop location: 125 S Wacker is a short CTA ride from River North, with evening appointments available throughout the week
No assigned villain: Couples therapy here is relational. The relationship is the client, not one partner or the other
20 years of Chicago couples work means patterns get recognized quickly, and sessions are efficient because the assessment is accurate.
Yes, at both Chicago offices. The Loop office at 125 S Wacker Drive is accessible via the Metra Union Pacific North line from Evanston, which makes it a practical commute for most clients. Telehealth is also available for sessions where the commute is not practical.
Yes. Premarital counseling is a structured 6 to 8 session program covering communication, conflict resolution, finances, family expectations, and intimacy. It can be delivered via telehealth or in person at either Chicago office.
This is one of the most common situations I work with. Relationship therapy for one is individual therapy focused on relationship issues, designed for the partner who is willing to do the work even when the other is not ready. Individual therapy changes relationship dynamics more than most people expect.
Saturday morning and afternoon appointments are available at the Michigan Avenue office for couples who prefer weekend sessions. Online couples therapy is available any day of the week.
The first session is designed exactly for this uncertainty. We talk briefly, you get a sense of the approach, and you decide without any obligation or paperwork.
Yes. Telehealth couples sessions are available for partners throughout Illinois. Many River North couples use online therapy for its scheduling flexibility, particularly during heavy work travel periods.
Completely. Couples therapy is equally relevant for engaged couples, cohabiting partners, and long-term relationships at any stage. The work is the same regardless of legal status.
